On Tuesday night at the city council meeting, some individuals demanding that Chico adopt a ceasefire resolution disrupted the meeting. One speaker led part of the crowd in a “Free Palestine” chant.
I’d like to applaud Mayor Coolidge and the city council for maintaining the rules of the meeting that help the business of the city to go forward. Public comments should relate to the city’s purview. When comments were off track, the mayor did not give in to demands, but emphasized the rules of a city council meeting and adjourned the meeting when necessary.
If an individual had asked the council to pass a resolution banning the antisemitic slogan, “From the River to the Sea,” the council might also have deemed that as outside its purview.
It’s good to have elected officials that follow through.
Chico City Council members also represent citizens who do not support a unilateral ceasefire since this would allow Hamas, a terrorist group, to prolong their reign of terror over the people of Israel and Gaza.
Does anyone remember a ceasefire resolution brought forth to the city council after 9/11 when the U.S. went after the Taliban in Iraq?
